Planning Board
The Planning Board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Smithfield Town Hall. Applications must be submitted by the first Friday of each month to be considered for an upcoming meeting.

Planning Board Responsibilities
The Planning Board serves in an advisory capacity to the Town Council by reviewing land use and development matters and helping guide the orderly growth of the Town of Smithfield and its Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). Responsibilities include:

Reviewing development proposals, rezoning requests, and other land use applications, and making recommendations to the Town Council.

Helping guide the future growth and development of the Town of Smithfield and its ETJ.

Recommending updates and amendments to planning policies, ordinances, and development regulations.

Assisting with the preparation and periodic updates of the Town's Comprehensive Growth Management Plan.

Evaluating proposed developments for consistency with the Town's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), adopted plans, and long-range planning goals.

Keeping the Town Council and the public informed on planning-related issues and community development initiatives.

Performing additional planning-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Town Council.
Planning Board members are appointed by the Town Council to serve three-year terms. Members receive a monthly stipend of $50 for their service.
